Isuzu has unveiled an electric version of its popular D-Max pick-up truck at The Commercial Vehicle show in Birmingham this week. The D-Max EV is set to hit the UK market in February next year, where it will compete with other electric pick-up trucks like the KGM Musso EV and the Maxus eTerron 9.

The electric D-Max boasts full-time four-wheel drive and a payload capacity of over a tonne, making it a versatile option for both work and leisure. It features a pair of electric motors, one on each axle, delivering a combined output of 188bhp and 240lb ft of torque. This allows the D-Max EV to accelerate from 0-62mph in 10.1 seconds and reach a top speed of over 80mph.

Equipped with a 66.9kWh battery, the D-Max EV offers a WLTP range of 163 miles and can be charged at speeds of up to 50kW, allowing for a 20-80% top-up in just one hour. Despite the addition of the battery, the D-Max EV maintains its off-road capabilities with 210mm of ground clearance, a wading depth of 600mm, and approach and departure angles of 30.5deg and 24.2deg.

In addition to its permanent four-wheel drive system, the D-Max EV features a dedicated Rough Terrain Mode for extreme off-road adventures. Isuzu has also upgraded the suspension system with a bespoke de Dion rear setup, replacing the leaf springs for improved handling.

One of the standout features of the D-Max EV is its impressive payload capacity of over 1000kg and towing capability of up to 3500kg. The electric pick-up truck weighs 2350kg at the kerb, although the impact on range when fully loaded has yet to be disclosed.

Inside, the D-Max EV mirrors its diesel counterpart with a range of modern features including a touchscreen infotainment system, digital driver’s display, dual-zone climate control, parking sensors, and heated front seats. The electric pick-up truck offers a seamless transition for customers familiar with the diesel D-Max, while also providing the benefits of zero-emission driving.

Overall, the Isuzu D-Max EV combines the practicality and ruggedness of a traditional pick-up truck with the efficiency and sustainability of electric power, making it a compelling option for those in the market for an electric workhorse.
