Nio Firefly begins deliveries in China

Nio’s third brand, Firefly, has recently rolled out its first electric vehicle (EV) model in China. The brand’s launch event took place just 10 days ago, and the first deliveries have already begun. The delivery ceremony was attended by Nio’s founder, chairman, and CEO William Li in Guangzhou, Guangdong province, as well as Firefly’s president Daniel Jin in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province.

Firefly’s debut model, also named Firefly, was officially introduced in China on April 19 to compete with the likes of BMW Mini and Mercedes-Benz Smart. Priced at RMB 119,800 ($16,470) including the battery pack, the Firefly model is positioned as an affordable electric vehicle option in the market.

Similar to Nio’s other models, Firefly supports battery swap technology, allowing consumers to participate in a BaaS (battery as a service) rental purchase program. However, the BaaS program for Firefly is set to become available starting August 1, offering consumers the option to rent the battery pack and only purchase the vehicle body.

Initially planning to launch Firefly in Europe, Nio had to adjust its strategy due to higher tariffs. Co-founder and president Qin Lihong mentioned that Firefly is targeting a launch between June and August in Europe, with plans to expand to about 20 overseas markets by the end of the year. The brand aims to complete its launch in 16 overseas countries and regions this year, with a specific focus on the UK and Southeast Asia for the right-hand drive version of the vehicle.

At the ongoing Shanghai auto show, Firefly cars are being showcased alongside Nio’s main brand, while Onvo, another sub-brand, has a separate stand. The model is expected to have varying sales strategies and pricing in different regions to cater to consumer demand and policy environments.

Overall, Firefly’s entry into the EV market signifies Nio’s continued expansion and commitment to providing innovative electric vehicle solutions to consumers globally. With plans for international launches and strategic pricing approaches, Firefly is poised to make a significant impact in the evolving automotive industry landscape.
