Jeep recalls over 63,000 Cherokees due to loss of power, has no fix

Stellantis, the parent company of Jeep, is issuing a recall for 63,082 Jeep Cherokee crossovers due to a problem with the 2-speed power transfer case, also known as the Power Transfer Unit. The affected models are from the years 2017-2019 and may experience a sudden loss of power and difficulty shifting into “park” because of damaged Power Transfer Units. The issue stems from improperly seated snap rings in the units, which can lead to uncontrolled movement of an input shaft, causing wear and potential disengagement from the transmission.

This malfunction poses a safety risk as it can result in a loss of power while driving and the inability to stay in “park” when the vehicle is stationary, increasing the chances of a crash or rollaway. Drivers may also notice a “Service 4WD” message on the dashboard, as well as noise or vibration if this problem occurs.

This is not the first time Stellantis has had to address issues with the Power Transfer Units in Jeep Cherokees. Previous recalls in 2020 and 2023 also addressed similar concerns related to rollaway risks and loss of power. While Stellantis is aware of 1,064 warranty claims and 55 service records related to this issue, there have been no reported crashes or injuries linked to it.

As of now, there is no remedy for the latest transfer case recall. Owners will be notified by mail starting Feb. 13 and will be informed when a solution is available. In the meantime, owners can contact Stellantis’ customer service department at 1-800-853-1403 with any inquiries or visit the automaker’s recall website. The reference number for this recall is 01C.

It is essential for Jeep Cherokee owners to take this recall seriously and follow the instructions provided by Stellantis to ensure the safety and proper functioning of their vehicles. Stay informed and proactive in addressing any potential issues with your vehicle to avoid any safety hazards on the road.
