LG Chem Company Ltd, a leading chemicals unit of South Korea’s LG Group, made a significant announcement at the Interbattery 2025 exhibition in Seoul. The company unveiled its latest innovation, the “LG Precursor-Free” (LPF) cathode material, showcasing its commitment to advancing battery technology.

At the event, which featured over 640 global companies, LG Chem showcased its plans to become the first South Korean company to mass produce precursor-free cathode materials. Traditionally, cathode materials require precursor materials like cobalt hydroxide or lithium hydroxide. However, with the LPF cathode material, LG Chem eliminates the need for precursors by directly calcining custom-designed metals. This not only enhances power performance at low temperatures but also streamlines development processes. Additionally, this technology reduces the environmental impact by eliminating the need for expanding precursor production capacity and lowering wastewater and carbon emissions.

The company aims to commence mass production of LPF cathode materials in the first half of the year. By leveraging this technology, LG Chem plans to offer customers tailored solutions in terms of performance, cost, and environmental sustainability across various products.

LG Chem also introduced its flagship ultra-high nickel cathode materials, with 95% nickel content, at the exhibition. These materials, along with a range of technical solutions, are geared towards enhancing the cost-effectiveness of electric vehicles (EVs) under the theme “Sustainable Future, Powered by LG Chem.” The company also showcased high-voltage medium-nickel high-density lithium iron phosphates (LFP) and advanced technologies used in its smart factories.

Furthermore, LG Chem presented next-generation materials, such as safety solutions like Nexula™, flame barrier foams (FBF), and flame barrier sheets (FBS) to prevent or delay fires in batteries. The company also displayed new cables and housings for EV chargers and next-generation cathode materials for dry electrode and solid-state batteries.

In a statement, LG Chem’s CEO, Shin Hak-Cheol, emphasized the company’s commitment to innovation and customer-centric solutions. He stated, “We will actively target the future market with next-generation innovative materials for batteries, such as LPF cathode materials and safety solutions. We will lead the battery materials market with our continuous technological innovations and customer-focused solutions.”

Overall, LG Chem’s presence at Interbattery 2025 highlighted its leadership in the battery materials market and its dedication to advancing sustainable and efficient energy solutions for the future.
