The state of Massachusetts is leading the way in the adoption of cutting-edge vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technology with the launch of a groundbreaking pilot program. Backed by the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC), this two-year initiative aims to deploy 100 bidirectional chargers across the state, enabling electric vehicles (EVs) to not only receive power but also give it back to the grid.

These bidirectional chargers will provide an estimated 1.5 MW of new storage capacity, allowing EVs to serve as mobile energy storage units. This innovative approach helps balance demand, supports renewable energy use, and strengthens the state’s energy infrastructure. The program is also focused on ensuring that low-income and disadvantaged communities have access to this transformative technology.

One of the largest state-led V2X initiatives in the US, the Massachusetts pilot program seeks to address key challenges in deploying bidirectional charging technology. By strategically placing chargers in various settings, the program aims to identify and overcome barriers to wider adoption of V2X technology.

Participants in the program, including EV owners and fleet operators, will receive bidirectional chargers capable of vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and backup power operations at no cost. The benefits include no-cost charging infrastructure, grid resilience, clean energy integration, backup power capabilities, and revenue opportunities by sending stored energy back to the grid.

Leading the implementation of the program are clean energy solutions firm Resource Innovations and vehicle-grid integration tech company The Mobility House. By providing charging infrastructure and eliminating financial barriers, the program aims to create a scalable blueprint for V2X programs nationwide.

Enrollment in the program is open until June 2025, and more information can be found on the MassCEC V2X Program webpage. Eligible bidirectional vehicles can also be found on the program’s website, offering a glimpse into the future of sustainable transportation and energy integration.

In conclusion, the Massachusetts V2X pilot program is paving the way for a cleaner, more resilient energy future by leveraging the power of electric vehicles to support the grid and promote renewable energy use. With a focus on accessibility and innovation, this initiative sets a new standard for sustainable transportation initiatives across the country.
