Mercedes-AMG is taking a unique approach to its upcoming electric vehicles by simulating the experience of internal-combustion powertrains. The goal is to replicate the emotional connection that drivers have with traditional V8 and V12-powered sports cars.
During the launch of the AMG Concept GT XX, Mercedes-Benz Group tech chief Markus Schäfer hinted at the brand’s plans to recreate elements such as gearchanges and V8 vibrations to enhance the driving experience for enthusiasts. He emphasized the importance of the car’s noise, sound level, vibration, and gearshift in creating a truly immersive driving experience.
The production version of the GT XX, set to be released next year, will utilize speakers in its headlights to emit the distinctive noise of an AMG V8. However, Schäfer’s comments suggest that Mercedes-AMG is looking to go even further by emulating the characteristics of a combustion drivetrain, similar to what the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N has done to increase driver engagement.
The flexibility of the GT XX’s axial-flux electric motors, developed by Yasa, plays a crucial role in achieving this goal. Schäfer highlighted the importance of authenticity in terms of power, drivability, and track performance, while also emphasizing the emotional aspect of the driving experience, including noise and vibration harshness.
In a video shared on Mercedes-AMG’s social media channels, the GT XX can be seen simulating a gear change before coming to a stop. Schäfer assured that the car will deliver everything that fans of V8 and V12 race-oriented AMGs expect, despite being an electric vehicle.
Schäfer acknowledged the challenge of transitioning hardcore V8 fans to electric vehicles, noting that a pure-electric car alone may not be enough to satisfy their needs. By simulating the characteristics of traditional powertrains, Mercedes-AMG aims to create a seamless transition for enthusiasts while delivering a truly immersive and emotional driving experience.
