Mercedes-Benz is making strides in the development of its upcoming entry-level G-Class, a smaller electric car that will compete with rugged crossovers like the Land Rover Defender ‘Sport’. Set to debut in 2027, the eagerly awaited model, known as ‘Little G’, will be a sibling to the larger, famed off-roader and will be exclusively sold as an EV. This move is aimed at establishing Mercedes in the thriving rugged crossover market.
The idea for the smaller G-Class was first announced by Mercedes CEO Ola Källenius at the 2023 Munich motor show. It is designed to slot beneath the current model as part of the company’s G sub-brand, which includes Maybach, EQ, and AMG variants.
Unlike its ladder-frame chassis siblings, the new 4×4 will utilize Mercedes’ new MB:EA platform, which is more conventional. This platform, also used in the upcoming electric versions of the GLC and C-Class saloon, features a unibody construction, an 800V electric architecture, and a fifth-generation battery that aims to provide a range of over 434 miles.
In terms of design, the Little G will draw inspiration from the iconic DNA of the existing G-Class while maintaining its own unique character. The car will be recognizable as a G-Class, with a distinguishing lower-case ‘g’ in its nameplate.
Despite being positioned as a luxury option, the Little G is expected to have a starting price of around £70,000. This places it above rivals like the Defender ‘Sport’ and the Toyota Compact Cruiser in terms of pricing.
One of the standout features of the new G-Class is its traditional utilitarian design, with a squared-off profile and flat, vertical surfaces that give it a rugged military-grade aesthetic. The car will also sport a glasshouse with nearly flat windows all around.
While earlier design concepts included a U-shaped headlight graphic, the final version is expected to feature round headlights similar to those found on the larger G-Class model.
Overall, the Little G promises to be a unique and luxurious addition to Mercedes’ lineup, combining rugged off-road capabilities with modern electric technology. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting new model.
