Mercedes has unveiled a sneak peek into the powertrain technology of its upcoming electric CLA, showcasing a range of innovative EV features and intriguing battery options. The vehicle is set to achieve an impressive efficiency of 12kWh/100km, surpassing current industry standards. This high efficiency is made possible by Mercedes’ new compact EDU 2.0 electric motor, part of the Mercedes Modular Architecture (MMA) that will be the foundation for future electric vehicles. The rear axle will feature a 200kW drive motor, with all-wheel drive models having an additional 80kW unit on the front axle. A two-speed transmission will optimize efficiency at varying speeds.
To enhance cold-weather performance, the CLA will utilize an air-to-air heat pump, capturing heat from the motor, battery, and ambient air to warm the cabin. Mercedes has also introduced two battery options for the CLA, each with distinct chemistries. The larger 85kWh battery is capable of an impressive 750km (466mi) WLTP range, thanks to the addition of silicon oxide to the anode for increased energy density. The smaller 58kWh battery will use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry, known for its durability and simplicity in mineral sourcing.
In terms of charging capabilities, the premium battery will feature an 800V configuration capable of up to 320kW charging speeds. This allows for a rapid addition of 300km (186mi) of range in just 10 minutes. Mercedes set a record by covering 3,717km (2,309mi) in 24 hours at the Nardo test track in Italy using the high charging rate of the CLA.
One unique feature of the CLA is the inclusion of both NACS and CCS charging ports, providing flexibility to owners during the transition to standardized charging infrastructure. Mercedes plans for future models to support bidirectional charging, though it’s unclear if the CLA will have this capability.
Overall, the CLA showcases Mercedes’ commitment to efficiency, innovation, and adaptability in the electric vehicle space. With a range of battery options, high-speed charging capabilities, and a unique dual charging port setup, the CLA is poised to make a significant impact in the EV market. Stay tuned for more details on pricing, availability, and design as the vehicle moves closer to production.
