MG ES5 electric SUV enters China for 13,950 USD with subsidies

SAIC-owned MG has officially launched sales of the highly anticipated MG ES5 electric crossover in China. The starting price for this innovative vehicle is set at 116,900 yuan (equivalent to around 16,300 USD). However, with all the discounts and subsidies applied, the entry-level ES5 can be purchased for as low as 99,900 yuan (roughly 13,950 USD).

The MG ES5 boasts an impressive range of up to 525 km and is powered by an electric motor that delivers 125 kW (equivalent to 168 hp). This new offering from MG aims to boost the brand’s sales performance in the Chinese market, as the company has experienced a decline in domestic sales volume in recent years.

The compact SUV design of the MG ES5 features sharp LED running lights, an aggressive front bumper, and a slightly bulky overall appearance. The vehicle’s dimensions measure 4476/1849/1621 mm with a wheelbase of 2730 mm, and it rides on either R17 or R18 wheels.

One of the standout features of the MG ES5 is its low center of gravity, which is set at just 530 mm. This, combined with a 50-50 weight distribution on the axles, results in exceptional handling capabilities. The vehicle also comes equipped with a McPherson suspension in the front and a five-link independent suspension in the rear.

Inside the MG ES5, a minimalistic design approach is evident, with a large 15.6-inch floating screen, a 10.25-inch LCD instrument cluster, and a gear shifter mounted behind the three-spoke D-shaped steering wheel. The interior also includes a wireless charging pad, cup holders, and a variety of speaker options.

The MG ES5 offers two battery options made by CATL: 40.1 kWh and 62.2 kWh. Paired with a 125-kW electric motor, the vehicle can accelerate from zero to one hundred kilometers per hour in 7.7-7.9 seconds. The CLTC range of the MG ES5 is estimated to be between 425 and 525 km.

MG has implemented a unique pricing strategy for the ES5 in the Chinese market, including a suggested retail price, a limited-time discount of 10,000 yuan for each trim level, and a 10,000 yuan trade-in subsidy. The original prices for the MG ES5 without any special offers are as follows:

– MG ES5 425 Pro – 116,900 yuan (16,300 USD)
– MG ES5 425 Plus – 126,900 yuan (17,700 USD)
– MG ES5 515 Pro – 126,900 yuan (17,700 USD)
– MG ES5 515 Plus – 136,900 yuan (19,100 USD)
– MG ES5 525 Max – 146,900 yuan (20,500 USD)

The MG ES5 is set to revolutionize the electric crossover market in China with its cutting-edge design, impressive performance, and competitive pricing.
