MG Teases Launch of Tesla Model Y Rival at Goodwood Festival of Speed
MG is set to unveil a new electric vehicle at the upcoming Goodwood Festival of Speed, hinting at a potential competitor to the Tesla Model Y. The brand recently shared a preview image on social media, teasing the “beginning of our next chapter” with a silhouette that resembles the IM6 crossover.
While details are scarce, speculation suggests that MG could be introducing the IM brand to the UK market, following a similar strategy implemented in Australia. The IM brand is a collaboration between MG’s parent company SAIC, Alibaba, and Zhangjiang Hi-Tech, focusing on premium offerings.
MG’s recent shift towards a more upscale market positioning is evident with the launch of models like the Cyberster sports car, Cyber X concept, and the S5 EV. The move towards higher-end vehicles aligns with reports of IM models making their way to the UK, with sightings of the L6 saloon in MG’s flagship showroom in London.
In China, the IM6 SUV boasts impressive performance figures, with power outputs reaching up to 767bhp and a 0-62mph time of 3.5 seconds. The model also features cutting-edge 800V electrical systems, enabling rapid charging speeds of up to 396kW and quick 30-80% refills in just over 15 minutes.
As MG prepares to expand its electric vehicle lineup and venture into the premium market segment, all eyes are on the Goodwood Festival of Speed for the official unveiling of their latest offering.
