MG to Launch New Models with Semi-Solid State Battery in 2025
Recently, Zhou Yu, GM of SAIC’s MG brand division, made an exciting announcement on Weibo regarding the upcoming launches for MG in 2025. According to Zhou, the first new MG model to be introduced in 2025 will come equipped with a semi-solid state battery as standard, promising high performance at an affordable price point. Additionally, MG will also unveil the DMH plug-in hybrid power system in 2025.
Yu’s announcement marks a significant shift from previous statements by SAIC, where it was indicated that an all-solid state battery would be the first to be installed in an MG vehicle. However, the timeline for this development seems to have been pushed back to possibly 2026 or 2027. Alternatively, it is speculated that the semi-solid state battery mentioned by Zhou could be a compromise from the initial plans for a solid-state battery.
With two all-new models and two facelifted models planned for the Chinese market in 2025, MG’s lineup is set to undergo a significant transformation. The Cyber GTS is expected to be one of the recipients of the semi-solid state battery, offering cutting-edge technology and impressive performance.
Notably, the IM L6 electric SUV features a semi-solid state battery with a capacity of 123.7 kWh and an energy density of over 300 Wh/kg. This battery enables a range of over 1,002 kilometers and supports ultra-fast charging, making it a promising power source for MG’s upcoming models.
As for the second all-new model, details remain scarce. However, MG has a range of newer models available internationally that could potentially make their way to the Chinese market. The introduction of the DMH powertrain, already seen in the MG HS in other markets, hints at a possible debut for the second-generation MG HS in China.
The DMH powertrain, shared with SAIC’s Roewe brand, offers impressive performance with a plug-in hybrid system capable of delivering an EV range of up to 75 miles. With a focus on electrification and advanced powertrain technologies, MG is poised to make a significant impact in the Chinese automotive market.
