Mini Cooper hatch and Convertible review

The exterior design of the Cooper has taken a more minimalist approach compared to previous generations, removing some of the busy ornamentation. However, the interior design takes this minimalism to the extreme, but in a more stylish and warm way than seen in Teslas.

The controls and instrumentation in the Cooper have been simplified to a large round touchscreen and a small panel of buttons and switches underneath, similar to the Mini Countryman SUV. Despite its modernity, the interior of the modern Mini pays homage to the original Issigonis Mini more strongly than ever before.

One unique feature is the knitted fabric used on the dashboard and doors, adding a touch of plushness and tactility. This is a refreshing change from the screen-on-a-plank design favored by Tesla. Other interesting details include a strap forming the steering wheel’s lower spoke and denim-and-houndstooth upholstery.

The screen-dominant layout of the Cooper has significantly impacted usability, with nearly every function incorporated into the touchscreen, including the gauge cluster. The absence of a traditional gauge cluster in front of the driver has divided opinions among testers. Some find it problematic, while others appreciate the clear view it provides.

The Level 1 option package includes a head-up display, albeit a more basic version where information is projected onto a small screen. The center screen can become cluttered, and it’s frustrating that a tachometer is only available in Go-Kart mode. The infotainment interface, typical of current-gen BMWs, is convoluted with overloaded menu structures.

Oddment storage space is adequate, but the Cooper lacks significant rear passenger and boot space. However, for two people or occasional rear passengers, it is sufficient. The boot is deep with a variable-height floor, and there is ample adjustment in the steering column.

The Convertible model offers slightly more rear passenger room when the roof is up, although getting in and out is not graceful. With the roof down, visibility improves, and the rear wind deflector provides reasonable shelter. The seats in the Cooper have lost some adjustability features, making them less comfortable than in previous models.

Overall, the Cooper offers a unique and stylish interior design with modern technology and thoughtful details. While it may lack in some practical aspects like rear passenger and boot space, it excels in providing a comfortable and enjoyable driving experience.
