Momenta, a Chinese autonomous driving company, is set to test Level 4 autonomous robotaxis with Uber Technologies in Munich, Germany starting in 2026. This collaboration will see Momenta integrating its AI-driven autonomous driving technology into Uber’s global platform, marking another milestone in Uber’s platform integration with Chinese autonomous driving companies.

The announcement was made in a joint statement released by Momenta and Uber. The two companies have ambitious plans to expand Level 4 autonomous driving technology to other European cities, with testing set to commence in Munich next year. Momenta’s partnership with leading German brands like Mercedes-Benz and BMW has further solidified its presence within Bavaria and the wider German automotive industry.

Momenta’s CEO, Cao Xudong, expressed excitement about showcasing the transformative potential of Momenta’s AI-driven Robotaxi technology in urban mobility through the testing of autonomous vehicles in Munich. The company is pursuing a “two-leg strategy” by deploying Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) with OEM partners while also advancing robotaxi technology, paving the way for large-scale practical applications.

Already, Momenta’s ADAS systems have been deployed in 400,000 vehicles through OEM partnerships. In addition to the upcoming robotaxi testing in Munich, Momenta currently operates a robotaxi service in Shanghai and aims to achieve commercial deployment without onboard safety operators by the end of this year.

Founded in 2016, Momenta boasts an impressive list of investors including SAIC Motor, Toyota, General Motors, Mercedes-Benz, and Nio Capital. The company previously entered a robotaxi partnership with Uber in May this year, with plans to launch the service first in Europe by 2026, featuring onboard safety operators initially.

Momenta joins a growing list of Chinese companies collaborating with Uber on robotaxi initiatives. Companies like WeRide, Baidu, and Pony AI have also established similar partnerships with the ride-hailing giant. The integration of Momenta’s autonomous driving technology into Uber’s platform signals a significant step forward in the development and deployment of autonomous vehicles in urban environments.

In conclusion, Momenta’s upcoming testing of Level 4 autonomous robotaxis with Uber in Munich represents a significant milestone in the advancement of autonomous driving technology. The collaboration between these two companies is poised to revolutionize urban mobility and pave the way for the widespread adoption of autonomous vehicles in the near future.
