Seat’s Future Plans: Focusing on Electrification and Affordable Hybrid Cars
Seat’s lineup may see some changes in the near future, with the possibility of the Seat versions of the Leon and Ateca being dropped to solidify Seat’s role as a small, affordable hybrid car specialist. This decision comes as Seat focuses on updating models like the Ibiza and Arona to cater to the evolving market demands.
During a recent interview, Griffiths, the CEO of Seat, confirmed that the Cupra Leon would receive updates to extend its production well into the next decade. These updates will include petrol and PHEV versions of the car, aligning it with the closely related Cupra Formentor.
Griffiths emphasized that both the Cupra Leon and Cupra Formentor are based on the same platform, and investments will be made to ensure their longevity. However, he also hinted that the next generation of Leon will be electric, showcasing Seat’s commitment to electrification in the long term.
While Seat is investing in the Ibiza and Arona models, Griffiths clarified that this shouldn’t be seen as a shift away from EVs. He highlighted the need to cater to the market demand for efficient ICE cars, hybrids, and plug-in hybrids, while still working towards achieving zero emissions.
Looking ahead, Seat is set to launch the Cupra Raval next year, a sub-€25,000 electric supermini that aims to make electromobility more accessible. This model, along with upcoming electric offerings from Volkswagen and Skoda, will play a key role in democratizing electric vehicles.
Griffiths emphasized that Seat and Cupra will have distinct focuses, with Cupra concentrating on fully electric and electrified vehicles, while Seat will continue to cater to combustion engine cars. This dual-brand strategy aims to provide consumers with a diverse range of options.
