Hitachi powers up construction site with hydrogen

Hitachi Energy has made a groundbreaking move in the construction industry by introducing its new HyFlex hydrogen generator in Rotterdam, Netherlands. This innovative generator is set to revolutionize off-grid charging in construction sites, offering a sustainable alternative to diesel power sources.

The deployment of the HyFlex hydrogen fuel cell (HFC) generator in Rotterdam marks a significant milestone for Hitachi Energy. By replacing an equivalent diesel generator producing 500-kilovolt-amperes (kVA), the construction site will save an impressive 200,000 gallons of diesel fuel per year and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 2,900 tons.

Unlike traditional diesel generators, the HyFlex generator operates quietly and emits almost no harmful pollutants. It delivers electricity and usable heat efficiently, requiring only about 70 kg of hydrogen per mWh of power. In comparison, a diesel generator would need over 70 gallons of diesel to produce the same amount of power, resulting in more than 700 kg of COâ‚‚ emissions.

Marco Berardi, Head of Grid & Power Quality Solutions and Service at Hitachi Energy, emphasized the company’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions. He stated, “We recognize that the entire energy ecosystem needs to move in the same direction. We are proud to have showcased HyFlex in the Netherlands, thanks to a unique collaboration with key industry players.”

The success of the HyFlex deployment in Rotterdam would not have been possible without the collaboration of industry giants such as Air Products, Dura Vermeer, and Hitachi Construction Machinery. These partnerships have paved the way for a cleaner, greener future in construction.

One of the key components of Hitachi’s sustainable ecosystem is the ZE135 electric excavator. This 15-ton excavator comes equipped with a 298 kWh battery and a powerful 160 kW electric motor. With up to six hours of continuous operation, the ZE135 exemplifies Hitachi’s commitment to zero-emission construction equipment.

Hitachi’s plans to create similar low-carbon ecosystems in noise- and pollution-sensitive areas demonstrate their dedication to environmental sustainability. By providing innovative solutions like the HyFlex generator and electric excavators, Hitachi is driving the construction industry towards a greener future.

Overall, Hitachi Energy’s debut of the HyFlex hydrogen generator in Rotterdam signifies a significant step forward in sustainable construction practices. With the potential to revolutionize off-grid charging and reduce carbon emissions, Hitachi is leading the way towards a more environmentally friendly construction industry.
