Mercedes-AMG to Introduce New Electric SUV Model
Mercedes-AMG is set to expand its electric lineup with a new high-performance SUV model based on the GLE platform. While the existing combustion-engined models offer both SUV and SUV-coupé variants, the new electric model will be available exclusively as an SUV. Insiders have revealed that the SUV design will feature a relatively upright tailgate and angled rear window, striking a balance between form and load-carrying space.
The upcoming GT SUV will be positioned dimensionally between the EQE SUV and EQS SUV, measuring in at around 4863mm in length. Inside, the vehicle will showcase a unique dashboard design and displays, powered by the new AMG.OS software.
AMG CEO Michael Schiebe has emphasized the popularity of SUVs in the brand’s lineup, leading to the development of a high-performance electric off-roader based on the AMG.EA platform. The brand’s focus remains on delivering the quintessential AMG driving experience, with electrification playing a supporting role.
While specific details about the battery technology remain under wraps, sources suggest that the new model will feature a different chemistry combination aimed at enhancing efficiency and extending range compared to current electric AMG offerings. The development team is also focusing on optimizing heat management, particularly in the realm of liquid cooling, to enable faster charging rates.
For comparison, the EQE 53 4Matic+ currently utilizes a 90.6kWh battery pack with a claimed range of 321 miles and a charging speed of 170kW. This translates to an impressive 112-mile range boost in just 15 minutes of charging.
