New York’s largest solar farm is a go with $950 million in funding

Clean energy investment manager Greenbacker Renewable Energy recently secured $950 million to construct what will become New York State’s largest solar farm. The 500-megawatt (MW) Cider project was acquired from renewable energy developer Hecate Energy, with construction commencing in October and expected to be completed by 2026.

On February 3, Hecate Energy announced that the New York Office of Renewable Energy Siting and Transmission (ORES) had officially issued a siting permit and a formal notice to proceed with construction for the Cider project. Greenbacker’s CEO, Charles Wheeler, expressed pride in being the owner of this groundbreaking solar energy project, highlighting the company’s commitment to advancing New York’s clean energy goals.

The Cider project will be located on approximately 2,500 acres of land in Genesee County, east of Buffalo. Once operational, it is projected to generate enough clean electricity to power around 120,000 New York households. This initiative is part of New York’s larger plan to source 70% of its electricity from clean energy by 2030.

New York currently ranks 8th nationally for solar capacity, with enough solar power to supply over a million homes. The state’s solar capacity is expected to increase significantly in the coming years, potentially moving it up to the 5th spot in the rankings.

In addition to the Cider project, Greenbacker is involved in 23 other large-scale clean energy developments that were awarded contracts by the New York State Energy and Research Development Authority (NYSERDA) in December. These projects play a crucial role in helping New York achieve its clean energy targets and reduce its carbon footprint.

For individuals living in regions prone to natural disasters and interested in enhancing their home’s resilience to power outages, adopting solar energy and incorporating a battery storage system can be a viable solution. By partnering with trusted and reliable solar installers, homeowners can access competitive pricing and high-quality solutions while saving money in the process.

If you’re considering transitioning to solar energy, platforms like EnergySage offer a convenient way to connect with pre-vetted solar installers who can provide personalized quotes and expert guidance throughout the installation process. By leveraging these resources, homeowners can make informed decisions about adopting clean energy solutions that align with their sustainability goals.

In conclusion, the development of the Cider project represents a significant milestone in New York’s transition towards a more sustainable and environmentally-friendly energy landscape. As the state continues to prioritize clean energy initiatives, projects like Cider will play a crucial role in shaping a greener future for New York and beyond.
