Lamborghini Urus to Remain a Plug-In Hybrid for Next Generation
The Lamborghini Urus will continue as a plug-in hybrid for its next generation after the electric variant was delayed to the middle of the next decade, CEO Stephan Winkelmann revealed in an exclusive interview with Autocar.
Winkelmann attributed the decision to the constantly changing regulations in the automotive industry, which have also impacted the timeline for the launch of Lamborghini’s first electric vehicle, a production version of the Lanzador concept set to debut in 2029.
The Urus, Lamborghini’s best-selling model, was initially planned to transition to a fully electric version before the end of the decade. However, Winkelmann confirmed that the Urus will now continue as a plug-in hybrid for its next generation.
According to Winkelmann, the new Urus PHEV is expected to debut in 2029, while the electric variant is scheduled for 2035 to comply with Europe’s zero-emissions regulations for new vehicles.
While technical details are yet to be revealed, the new Urus is likely to build upon the current model’s 789bhp output, making it the most powerful SUV in Lamborghini’s lineup.
Lamborghini’s decision to retain the Urus as a PHEV aligns with the strategy adopted by Volkswagen Group sibling Porsche, which will continue selling the ICE-powered Cayenne alongside the upcoming electric version to maximize profitability.
When questioned about the possibility of launching the electric Urus earlier than 2035, Winkelmann stated that the company will monitor market acceptance, regulatory changes, infrastructure development, and customer preferences before making any decisions.
While the next Cayenne will undergo a significant facelift, the new Urus will be a completely redesigned model with a fresh aesthetic. Winkelmann hinted that the future design of the Urus has not been finalized yet.
By the time the electric Urus hits the market, it will be the second electric vehicle in Lamborghini’s lineup. Winkelmann confirmed that the production version of the Lanzador is expected to debut by the end of the decade, with a decision on its launch timing to be made early next year.
