Mazda’s Future Plans for the MX-5

When will we see an electrified version of the iconic Mazda MX-5 hit the market? While Mazda has not provided a specific timeline, it is clear that the current MX-5 is here to stay until at least 2026, thanks to recent safety updates.

The unveiling of the Mazda Iconic SP concept hints at the brand’s intentions to include the MX-5 in its future electrified lineup. This concept serves as inspiration for the next generation of MX-5 models, showcasing Mazda’s commitment to innovation. Despite featuring a rotary engine like past RX sports cars, the Iconic SP is not a revival of the RX series but a unique vision for the MX-5’s evolution.

Mazda’s President, Guyton, acknowledges the technical challenges that come with electrifying the rotary engine and optimizing battery packaging. However, he remains confident in the brand’s ability to overcome these hurdles and create a compact, high-performance sports car. The unique proportions of the Iconic SP concept, made possible by the rotary engine, set it apart from other models in Mazda’s lineup.

While the concept showcased is a hard-top coupé, Guyton assures that convertible options are in the works, catering to different market preferences. As a global car manufacturer, Mazda recognizes the importance of producing decarbonized models that cater to diverse markets. The powertrain solution presented in the Iconic SP concept reflects Mazda’s commitment to sustainability while meeting the needs of various regions.
