Nio has recently filed regulatory documents for its upcoming next-generation ES8 SUV, which is set to be even larger than its predecessor. The China Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) released the latest catalog of models seeking public feedback, with the new ES8 included. The public can submit feedback from June 21 to 27, marking the final regulatory step before approval for sale in China.
The new ES8 is listed in the catalog with the product model number NAL6533BSEVE1 and comes in six- and seven-seat layouts. It boasts dimensions of 5,280 mm in length, 2,010 mm in width, and 1,800 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,250 mm. These measurements exceed those of its predecessor, which measured 5,099 mm in length, 1,989 mm in width, and 1,750 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,070 mm.
Images in the catalog reveal additional LiDAR on each side of the body, in addition to the roof-mounted LiDAR carried over from the previous model. The new ES8 has a curb weight of 2,630 kilograms and supports a maximum speed of 220 kilometers per hour. It is powered by dual motors from Nio’s motor division XPT, offering a peak power of 180 kW for the front motor and 340 kW for the rear motor, similar to its predecessor. The SUV utilizes ternary lithium batteries supplied by CATL.
Nio’s founder and CEO, William Li, announced at the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show that the third-generation ES8 would debut in the fourth quarter of the year. The ES8, Nio’s first mass-produced model, was initially launched in 2017 and has undergone updates over the years. The current flagship SUV, the ES8, may soon be succeeded by the ES9, which is expected to launch in the first half of 2026.
The ES9 is anticipated to feature advanced technology like the ET9, showcasing Nio’s latest innovations such as the Shenji NX 9031 smart driving chips and the SkyRide chassis. With the updated ES8 scheduled to go on sale between August and September, Nio continues to push the boundaries of electric vehicle technology and design.
