Nio Firefly Confirmed for European Market
The Nio Firefly, a new electric supermini from Chinese automaker Nio, is set to make its way to Europe, with UK sales on the horizon. Launched in China earlier this year, the Firefly boasts a range of 260 miles and a rear-mounted 141bhp motor, all for a price equivalent to around £12,500.
Originally introduced as a standalone brand, the Firefly is now part of Nio’s sub-brand lineup, alongside Onvo. Despite being only available in left-hand-drive configuration at the moment, plans are in place for a right-hand-drive variant to be launched in the UK by October.
Nio has seen success with the Firefly in its home market, with 3680 units sold in May alone, contributing to a 13.1% year-on-year sales increase for the brand. The company is currently in the midst of a major expansion into Europe, with plans to enter 16 new markets this year, including Austria, Belgium, and Poland.
Aside from the Firefly, Nio will also introduce the EL6 and EL8 SUVs, ET5 saloon, and ET5 Touring estate to European consumers. Further announcements regarding Nio’s plans for the region are expected in the coming weeks.
There are also reports that Nio is gearing up to launch the Onvo L60, a Tesla Model Y competitor, in the UK in the near future. The absence of import tariffs on Chinese EVs in the UK has been cited as a driving factor behind Nio’s decision to target the British market.
