Nio Onvo launches service allowing owners to upgrade battery packs on demand

Onvo, a sub-brand of Nio (NYSE: NIO), has introduced a new flexible battery upgrade service that allows owners of standard-range models to switch to long-range battery packs on a daily, monthly, or annual basis. This service will be available starting March 1, with upgrades costing RMB 45 ($6.18) per day, RMB 800 per month, or RMB 8,800 per year.

The standard-range battery pack from Onvo has a capacity of 60 kWh and provides a range of 555 kilometers for the L60 model, the brand’s current offering. In comparison, the long-range battery pack has a capacity of 85 kWh and can offer a range of up to 730 kilometers.

Similar to Nio’s main brand models, the Onvo L60 supports battery swap technology, enabling flexible battery upgrades for owners. The brand will initially launch the service in 16 cities on a trial basis, gradually expanding to more locations based on the availability of the 85-kWh long-range battery pack. By mid-March, Onvo aims to offer the service nationwide.

In addition to the flexible upgrade options, Onvo is providing incentives for early adopters. Customers who purchased the standard-range L60 before February 28 will receive five vouchers for free battery upgrades. Those who bought the long-range L60 will receive four complimentary swaps.

Nio, the parent company of Onvo, began offering permanent upgrades to 100-kWh long-range battery packs in 2020. Since then, they have introduced annual, monthly, and daily upgrade options for customers. The main Nio brand charges RMB 50 per day, RMB 880 per month, or RMB 9,800 per year for battery upgrades.

As with Nio’s pricing strategy, Onvo may adjust fees for flexible battery upgrades during peak travel periods around major holidays in China. The introduction of this new service aligns with Onvo’s commitment to providing innovative solutions to meet the evolving needs of electric vehicle owners.

Overall, the flexible battery upgrade service from Onvo offers a convenient and cost-effective way for owners to enhance the range and performance of their vehicles. With the flexibility to choose daily, monthly, or annual upgrades, Onvo is empowering customers to tailor their driving experience to suit their needs.
