Nio, the renowned electric vehicle (EV) maker, has been making significant strides in expanding its battery swap station network across China. In a recent update, the company revealed that it has added a total of 62 battery swap stations in China just this month, with a target of reaching about 200 new stations by the end of December.
The latest addition includes 6 new battery swap stations that have been put into operation, bringing the total number of facilities in China to an impressive 2,802, as indicated on Nio’s charging map. This push for expansion is in line with the company’s ambitious goal of adding a cumulative total of approximately 200 battery swap stations by the end of the month, as highlighted by William Li, Nio’s founder, chairman, and CEO, during a media meetup on December 12.
Although Nio had initially planned to add 1,000 battery swap stations in 2024, the company has faced some delays in achieving this target. To date, Nio has successfully added 486 battery swap stations in China, with a strong focus on expanding stations available for its sub-brand, Onvo. The aim is to have 1,000 stations catering to Onvo models by the end of the year.
The latest fourth-generation Nio battery swap stations are designed to be directly compatible with Onvo vehicles, while older stations will require a retrofit to accommodate these models. Additionally, Nio recently added 80 battery swap stations specifically for Onvo, bringing the total number of stations available for Onvo models to 857.
As of December 16, Nio has strategically positioned 910 battery swap stations near highways in China, further enhancing accessibility for its customers. The company also boasts 4,175 charging stations in China, equipped with 24,555 charging piles. Moreover, Nio’s charging map provides access to a vast network of 1.16 million third-party charging piles for added convenience.
In a remarkable milestone, Nio celebrated its 60 millionth battery swap service on December 13, averaging about 80,000 battery swap services per day. The company’s energy arm, Nio Power, achieved another milestone with the rollout of its 100th battery swap station at its factory in Wuhan, marking the beginning of a scale-up phase in production.
Looking ahead, Nio has plans to expand its battery swap station assembly capacity with three plants in China, including facilities in Wuhan, Kunshan, and Hefei. The company’s vehicle production currently takes place at its F1 and F2 plants in Hefei, with the F3 assembly plant expected to be operational in late 2025.
In a move towards international expansion, Nio recently launched its first battery swap station in Belgium, marking its 59th station in Europe. While Nio’s vehicles are already available in five European markets, including Norway, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Denmark, the company has yet to commence vehicle sales in Belgium.
With these strategic initiatives and a strong focus on enhancing its charging infrastructure, Nio continues to solidify its position as a leader in the EV industry, driving towards a sustainable and efficient future for electric mobility.
