Introducing the First Car from Nio’s New Firefly Brand
Chinese car maker Nio has recently unveiled the first car from its new Firefly brand, which is set to focus on small budget electric vehicles. The EV, currently known simply as Firefly, is being positioned as a direct competitor to the likes of the BYD Dolphin and Renault 5 in the rapidly growing electric hatch segment.
While the car is set to launch in China in April, a European launch is also on the horizon, although an official date has yet to be confirmed by Nio. With a starting price in China equivalent to £16,000, it is expected to be one of the most affordable EVs on the market. When it does make its way to Europe, it is likely to undercut the Renault 5’s price tag of £22,240.
Designed to stand out from its competitors, Firefly boasts a unique tri-circular headlight and rear lamp design, according to design director Kris Tomasson. With short overhangs and a slightly raked roofline to maximize range, the car combines style with practicality.
Inside, Firefly offers a leatherette-clad interior with a central screen and electrically adjustable seats. Blind-spot cameras are also included for added safety. Tomasson explained the inspiration behind the design, stating, “We started with something that was simple yet iconic: a firefly. Firefly is small, electric and buzzing with energy and totally mesmerising. It became the foundation of our design DNA.”
One of the standout features of Firefly is its split-level 92-litre frunk, which is among the largest in its class. With a drainage function, it even allows for unconventional usage, as Nio chairman William Li humorously suggested that fish could be stored in it. Additionally, the rear boot space, which can reach up to 1250 litres with the seats folded, offers ample storage capacity.
