Nissan-Led Project Advances Autonomous Driving in the UK
A groundbreaking project led by Nissan has taken autonomous driving technology “one step closer to reality” in the UK. Specially equipped electric vehicles (EVs) were trialled for the first time on the country’s residential and single-track rural roads, marking a significant milestone in the development of autonomous vehicles.
The EvolvAD scheme, part-funded by the government’s £100m Intelligent Mobility fund, was designed to assess the feasibility of using a fleet of self-driving Nissan Leaf cars in less connected areas outside of cities. The project aimed to leverage infrastructure such as CCTV in residential areas to enhance situational awareness through vehicle-to-infrastructure communication.
In addition to testing the vehicles in rural settings, the project sought to identify the technological requirements for autonomous vehicles to navigate more complex road conditions. This initiative was the final phase of an eight-year project that also included the HumanDrive and ServCity schemes, which focused on deploying autonomous vehicles in urban environments to support the development of robotaxi services.
Although the full results of the EvolvAD project are yet to be disclosed, Nissan’s R&D chief, David Moss, has hailed the initiative as “tremendously successful.” Moss emphasized the importance of autonomous driving technology in Nissan’s Ambition 2030 strategy, highlighting the significant benefits in terms of vehicle safety, environmental sustainability, and accessibility.
Throughout the eight-year project duration, the Nissan Leaf vehicles covered 16,000 miles across various terrains, including motorways, town centers, residential streets, and countryside lanes, without any recorded accidents. This achievement underscores the potential of autonomous driving technology to revolutionize the automotive industry.
Industry minister Sarah Jones MP praised the project for advancing autonomous vehicles in the UK, noting the country’s strong automotive sector. The successful implementation of the EvolvAD scheme represents a significant step towards the widespread adoption of autonomous driving technology in the UK.
