People ‘Need Buttons and Dials’

As technology continues to advance, automakers are constantly looking for ways to modernize their vehicles and improve the overall driving experience. One of the areas where this is most evident is in the design of car interiors, where traditional physical buttons and switches are being replaced by touchscreen displays. While this shift has led to a cleaner and more streamlined look, it has also raised concerns about the overreliance on infotainment systems and the lack of tactile feedback for essential functions.

Skoda, a subsidiary of Volkswagen, is one automaker that is taking a different approach to interior design. Instead of going all-in on screens, Skoda has found a balance between touchscreen controls and physical dials with its Smart Dials system. According to the company’s CEO, Klaus Zellmer, these dials provide a more intuitive and less distracting way to control essential functions in the car.

The Smart Dials system, which is currently available in the Skoda Superb and Combi models, allows drivers and passengers to control things like interior temperature, seat heating, and ventilation using physical dials. The system also includes a center dial that can toggle between various functions such as fan speed, air direction, and volume. While some functions still require interaction with the touchscreen, the Smart Dials system aims to simplify the user experience and reduce visual clutter in the cabin.

Skoda’s upcoming three-row electric SUV is expected to feature the Smart Dials system as well, following the positive reception of the system in the Superb and Combi models. Zellmer acknowledges that there were software issues with some of the VW Group’s current-gen models, but he assures that these problems have been largely resolved through software updates.

Looking ahead, Skoda is focused on making in-car technology less frustrating by improving its usability and simplifying the user interface. Zellmer emphasizes the importance of removing visual noise and unnecessary distractions from the cockpit, making it clear-cut and intuitive for drivers and passengers.

While the era of physical buttons and switches may be coming to an end, Skoda’s Smart Dials system demonstrates that there are still innovative ways to incorporate tactile controls into modern car interiors. By finding a balance between touchscreen displays and physical dials, automakers can create a more user-friendly and engaging driving experience for consumers.
