Peugeot has officially opened orders for the highly anticipated e-408, the brand’s latest electric offering in the saloon-esque hatchback segment that competes with the likes of the Polestar 2 and Tesla Model 3. With two trim levels available, the Allure starting at £42,175 and the GT range-topper priced at £44,945, the e-408 joins Peugeot’s lineup of vehicles that now includes options for petrol, hybrid, and electric powertrains.
The e-408 shares similarities with the e-308 hatchback but features a unique powertrain that includes a larger 58.2kWh NMC battery, setting it apart within the Stellantis group. This larger battery is made possible by the fastback’s longer wheelbase, providing engineers with more space to optimize performance. With a sleek design achieving a drag coefficient of 0.28, the e-408 boasts an impressive range of 281 miles and an efficiency of 4.6mpkWh. The battery can also be charged at rates of up to 120kW.
While Peugeot has the capability to accommodate a 98kWh battery, as seen in the e-3008 and e-5008 models offering up to 422 miles of range, the e-408 opts for the smaller battery size. Product director Jérôme Micheron explains that the decision was based on market positioning, stating that the average daily C-segment customer only drives 45km (28 miles) a day.
In comparison to its Polestar and Tesla competitors, which offer ‘Long Range’ variants with ranges of 408 and 390 miles respectively, the e-408 is equipped with a synchronous electric motor delivering 207bhp and 245lb ft of torque. This puts it in a competitive position within the market while offering customers a compelling electric option in the segment.
Overall, the Peugeot e-408 presents a compelling option for customers seeking an electric vehicle with a balance of range, efficiency, and performance. With its sleek design, advanced powertrain, and competitive pricing, the e-408 is set to make a mark in the electric vehicle market.
