Peugeot to Unveil Electric e-208 GTi Variant
Peugeot is set to reveal a hot GTi variant of the electric e-208 supermini on the eve of the Le Mans 24 Hour race next month. The brand has officially confirmed that the highly anticipated Alpine A290 rival will be unveiled on 13 June. While details are scarce, Peugeot promises that the new model will be “fun to drive, agile, powerful – built to deliver an unforgettable driving experience.”
This new GTi model will mark Peugeot’s return to the performance segment, following the discontinuation of the previous-generation Peugeot 308 GTi in 2021. It will also be the brand’s first sporty pure-electric car, signaling a shift towards electrification in its performance lineup.
Peugeot CEO Alain Favey expressed his excitement about reintroducing the GTi badge on the e-208, emphasizing the brand’s commitment to its rich heritage and passion for driving sensations. He highlighted the connection between Peugeot’s road cars and its motorsport endeavors, particularly in the World Endurance Championship with the 9X8 hypercar.
While the focus is currently on the e-208 GTi, Favey hinted at the possibility of expanding the GTi lineup based on customer feedback. He stated, “We don’t exclude that there might be other executions of the 208 GTi under the GTi badge, but for today there’s absolutely nothing planned in that sense.”
The decision to bring back the GTi badge aligns with Favey’s vision for Peugeot since taking over as CEO earlier this year. The brand aims to uphold its reputation for delivering exceptional driving experiences and cater to the evolving preferences of its customers.
With the unveiling of the electric e-208 GTi variant, Peugeot is poised to make a bold statement in the performance segment and demonstrate its commitment to innovation and driving excellence.
