Renault building R&D team in China to develop EVs for Europe, report says

French automaker Renault Group is making significant strides in the electric vehicle (EV) sector by establishing an R&D team in Shanghai, China. This move marks Renault’s first foray into developing a new car in China, with plans for production to commence by the end of 2025. However, it’s important to note that the new model will be exclusively manufactured and sold in Europe, as reported by AutoPix.

Renault’s decision to focus on EV development in China comes as part of its strategy to optimize its supply chain system in the region. By setting up a dedicated R&D team in Shanghai, Renault aims to leverage China’s growing expertise in the EV sector and streamline its operations to meet the evolving demands of the market.

The multinational automaker’s shift towards establishing a Chinese R&D team reflects a broader trend among global car manufacturers. Many companies are now relocating their research and development as well as supply chain operations to China to better adapt to the changing dynamics of the local market. Renault is joining the likes of Volkswagen, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz in tapping into China’s robust EV supply chain to enhance its competitive edge.

Renault has already assembled a sizeable R&D team in Shanghai, focused on revamping its EV program. This team operates under Renault China’s Shanghai branch but reports directly to the company’s headquarters in France. The automaker is also considering expanding its EV R&D operations in China to encompass a comprehensive system encompassing both software and hardware development.

Unlike some of its competitors, Renault’s approach in China is characterized by a lighter asset presence, allowing the company to prioritize its focus on key markets such as Europe. By leveraging China’s EV supply chain capabilities, Renault aims to strengthen its position in the global EV market while minimizing its exposure to the intense competition in China.

As Renault continues to ramp up its EV development efforts in China, the company remains committed to innovation and sustainability in the automotive industry. With a clear focus on leveraging China’s expertise in EV technology, Renault is poised to introduce cutting-edge electric vehicles to the European market in the coming years.
