Rivian, the well-known electric vehicle manufacturer, has recently made a strategic move by spinning off its micromobility business into a new EV startup called Also, Inc. This new brand will be focusing on lightweight vehicles such as electric scooters, bikes, and more. This decision comes after Rivian started a “stealth program” several years ago, recognizing the growing need for smaller, sustainable transportation options.
The initial goal of Rivian’s micromobility program was to leverage its advanced EV powertrain and software stack to develop superior products at a lower cost than what was currently available in the market. Over the years, Rivian has made significant advancements in cutting costs and improving efficiency, leading to the realization that this approach had the potential to unlock a large opportunity in the micromobility space.
As a result, Rivian announced the creation of Also, Inc., with a $105 million investment from Eclipse Ventures to support the startup’s growth. RJ Scaringe, Rivian’s CEO, will serve as Chairman of the Board of Directors for Also, Inc. Scaringe stated that the world’s transition to electrified transportation will require a range of vehicle types and form factors, and Also, Inc. aims to introduce innovative micromobility products that will define new categories.
While Rivian holds a substantial minority stake in Also, Inc., the new startup will operate as a standalone company with opportunities for collaboration in the future. The “stealth” micromobility program behind Also, Inc. comprises around 70 former employees from companies like Apple, Google, Tesla, and Uber, indicating a strong foundation of expertise in the industry.
Also, Inc. is set to unveil its first product later this year, though details remain scarce. Scaringe teased that the product will feature a seat, two wheels, a screen, computers, and a battery. In parallel, Rivian is gearing up to launch its midsize R2 electric vehicle, with plans to begin deliveries in the first half of 2026. The expansion at Rivian’s production facility in Normal, IL for the R2 remains on track, according to Tony Sanger, the company’s VP of production facilities.
Overall, Rivian’s spin-off of its micromobility business into Also, Inc. signifies a strategic move to tap into the growing market for sustainable transportation solutions. With a strong foundation of expertise and investment, Also, Inc. is poised to make a significant impact in the micromobility space with its innovative products and approach.
