The Afeela 1: Sony and Honda’s Joint Venture Electric Saloon Set to Launch in the USA in 2026

The highly anticipated Afeela 1, a collaboration between tech giant Sony and automotive powerhouse Honda, is set to make its debut in the US market in 2026. With a starting price of $89,900 (£72,000) and boasting an impressive 482bhp from a twin motor powertrain, the Afeela 1 is expected to revolutionize the electric car industry.

Originally unveiled in 2023, the sleek electric saloon from Sony Honda Mobility (SHM) made waves at the 2025 CES tech show in Las Vegas with a near-production version. Prospective buyers can now reserve their Afeela 1 for $200, with sales initially launching in California before expanding to other US states.

Yasuhide Mizuno, the head of Sony Honda Mobility, showcased the Afeela 1 at CES, describing it as being in “near final” design. The car’s advanced features were demonstrated, including voice command capabilities, hinting at the cutting-edge technology that will be integrated into the production models.

When the Afeela 1 hits Californian roads in mid-2026, it will be available in two trim levels, offering a claimed range of up to 300 miles and autonomous driving functions enabled by over 40 sensors, including a roof-mounted Lidar system.

Under the collaborative effort between Sony and Honda, the Afeela 1 will utilize Honda’s technical expertise for the vehicle’s underpinnings, while Sony will focus on in-vehicle technology and user interface. The electric platform shared with the forthcoming Honda 0 Series EVs will serve as the foundation for the Afeela 1.

Equipped with dual 241bhp electric motors, the Afeela 1 delivers a combined output of 482bhp, powered by a 91kWh lithium-ion battery that supports rapid charging speeds up to 150kW. The car’s agile and stable handling is enhanced by a 3D motion management system that optimizes ride comfort through robotics-based posture control technology.

Measuring 4915mm in length with a 3018mm wheelbase and a height of 1460mm, the Afeela 1 features a unique media bar at the front bonnet, acting as an external information display. The car’s double wishbone front suspension, multi-link rear suspension, and active rear spoiler contribute to its dynamic performance.

The Afeela Intelligent Drive system offers level 2+ autonomous driving capabilities, leveraging data from a comprehensive sensor array that includes cameras, Lidar, radar, and ultrasonic sensors. Inside the cabin, drivers will find a yoke-style steering wheel, a panoramic screen, and active noise cancelling technology, alongside the Afeela Personal Agent voice control system for seamless integration with various apps like Spotify, TikTok, and Zoom.
