T1 Energy, formerly known as FREYR Battery, is gearing up for the construction of its new solar cell factory in the US. The company has selected Yates Construction to handle preconstruction services and site preparations for its upcoming $850 million G2_Austin 5 GW Solar Cell Facility. This facility, located in Milam County, Texas, at the Sandow Lakes Advanced Manufacturing and Logistix Campus, is expected to be one of the largest solar cell factories in the country.
The project is anticipated to generate up to 1,800 new direct advanced manufacturing jobs in the US. Construction is slated to commence in mid-2025, with production of solar cells expected to begin by the end of 2026. Currently, there are fewer solar cell manufacturing sites in the US compared to solar module factories, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA).
In a significant development, T1 Energy recently completed the acquisition of Trina Solar’s 5 GW solar panel factory in Wilmer, Texas, renaming it as G1_Dallas. This factory, spanning 1.35 million square feet, currently employs over 1,000 individuals and is fully operational.
Daniel Barcelo, Chairman of the Board and CEO of T1 Energy, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, “Our facilities will manufacture solar cells and modules to invigorate our economy with abundant energy. We’re excited to work with Yates and Milam County to bring American advanced manufacturing to the heart of Texas and to unlock our most scalable energy resources.”
T1 Energy is in the process of finalizing commercial terms with Yates Construction as the General Contractor for the project. The company aims to bolster the US economy by leveraging renewable energy sources and creating sustainable manufacturing opportunities.
