Tesla can’t buy land in Australia because CEO Elon Musk is so ‘[redacted]’

Recently, Tesla has been facing opposition from locals in Australia over plans to build a battery factory and showroom near Adelaide. The main reason cited by most locals for opposing the project is their dissatisfaction with Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

The proposed location for the project is in Marion, a small city with a population of 4,101, which is a suburb of Adelaide, the capital of South Australia. Last month, a developer submitted plans to use a piece of land known as Chestnut Court Reserve, which has been inaccessible to the public since 2016 due to contamination concerns. The proposed development would involve cleaning up the contamination on the site and cutting down several trees, some of which are deemed dead or in ill health.

The developer plans to build a new facility that will serve as a showroom and service center for Tesla vehicles, as well as a facility for repurposing Tesla batteries. The specifics of how the repurposing will be done are not detailed in the plans, but it could involve using Tesla vehicle batteries in Powerwalls or in Tesla’s Powerpack grid storage projects, which are popular in South Australia.

The developer argues that Tesla already has a presence in the area, specifically in neighboring Tonsley, and that the facility would align with the community’s environmental goals. Additionally, the facility is expected to create around 100 full-time jobs in the local community, including highly skilled positions like battery researchers. The project is estimated to inject $56 million into the local economy.

Despite the developer’s arguments and the city council’s support for the project, the local community has expressed significant opposition. About 95% of residents disapprove of the plan, with only a small number of comments in favor of it. Many residents have voiced their concerns about Elon Musk and Tesla, with some resorting to colorful language to express their disapproval.

While the plans have not yet received a final vote, the strong opposition from residents highlights the challenges that Tesla is facing in the region. The negative sentiment towards Elon Musk and Tesla has been attributed to Musk’s controversial statements and actions, which have led to protests and declining sales in various regions.

Overall, the situation in Australia underscores the impact that Elon Musk’s behavior is having on Tesla’s reputation and business prospects. The company is facing an uphill battle to win over local communities and customers, as Musk’s actions continue to generate controversy and pushback.
