Tesla’s Model Y retail sales in China have been on a downward trend, with year-on-year declines in six out of the first eight months of the year. Despite this, there is hope on the horizon as deliveries for the six-seat Model Y L have begun this month.

In August, Model Y retail sales in China totaled 39,413 units, marking a 13.05 percent year-on-year decrease. However, this figure represents a 28.11 percent increase from the previous month. This decline in sales for the Tesla SUV in China is the second consecutive month of year-on-year decline.

The Model Y is a crucial model for Tesla, especially in the Chinese market where SUVs with ample interior space are highly favored by consumers. However, this year has seen a weakening performance for the Model Y in China, with retail sales declining in six of the first eight months.

Overall, from January to August, the Model Y’s retail sales in China totaled 241,670 units, reflecting a 16.51 percent year-on-year decrease. Despite this, there is optimism for the Model Y lineup with the introduction of the six-seat Model Y L.

The Model Y L was launched in China on August 19, with deliveries commencing on September 2. Orders for the Model Y L have been impressive, reaching 120,000 since its launch and averaging nearly 10,000 orders per day.

In addition to domestic deliveries, Tesla also exported 19,475 Model Y units from China in August, marking a 77.38 percent year-on-year increase. From January to August, the SUV saw 77,090 units exported from China, an 18.15 percent year-on-year growth.

In comparison, Tesla’s Model 3 sedan also experienced a decline in retail sales in China, with 17,739 units sold in August, down 2.14 percent year-on-year. However, this figure represents an 80.07 percent increase from the previous month. From January to August, Model 3 retail sales in China totaled 119,509 units, a 21.26 percent year-on-year increase.

Despite the challenges faced in retail sales, Tesla remains a key player in the Chinese market with its Model Y and Model 3 offerings. The company operates a Shanghai factory that produces both models for domestic deliveries and export operations.
