Fiat’s New Electric 500: A Modern Take on a Classic

Fiat’s model range may be slightly confusing with the old Fiat 500 living on as the Fiat 500 Hybrid, but the real gem is the newer electric 500. While it may look familiar at first glance, a closer look reveals that the new electric 500 is a completely fresh take on the classic design.

Developed as a purely electric car from the outset, the new Fiat 500 boasts a fairly sizeable 42kWh battery, offering a theoretical WLTP lab test range of 199 miles. However, real-world use has shown the range to be closer to 140 miles. There is also a cheaper Fiat 500 Action model with a 24kWh pack, but the shorter range may not justify the cost savings.

What sets the electric Fiat 500 apart is its driving performance. With a 117bhp motor, it is surprisingly zippy and fun for a city car. While the steering may feel light, the car offers plenty of grip and minimal body roll. It may not be ideal for long highway drives, but it handles city streets with ease.

The interior of the new Fiat 500 has also received a significant upgrade. While still featuring some plastic elements, the overall look is sleek and modern. The seats are comfortable, and the infotainment system is intuitive and responsive.

For those seeking a bit of open-air driving, there is a convertible model available with a roll-back canvas roof. However, tall drivers may find the interior space a bit cramped, especially in the rear seats.

Unfortunately, the electric 500’s list price has seen an increase due to inflation and the discontinuation of the Plug-in Car Grant. What was once a sub-£20,000 vehicle now starts at around £30,000. For the longer-range version, expect to pay even more. While the price tag may be steep for a small car, the Fiat 500’s charm and driving experience make it a compelling option, especially for urban commuters.

Overall, the new electric Fiat 500 offers a blend of retro styling and modern technology, making it a standout choice in the electric vehicle market. Its fun driving dynamics and stylish design make it a worthy contender for those looking for a compact and eco-friendly city car.
