Swift Current Energy has recently completed its 800-megawatt Double Black Diamond Solar project, located just 30 miles west of Springfield. This massive solar farm is now officially the largest operating solar farm east of the Mississippi River, and it is making a significant impact on reducing emissions while providing clean energy to major customers, including the City of Chicago.
Chicago has made a substantial commitment to sourcing approximately 70% of the power for its municipal operations from the Double Black Diamond Solar farm. This includes powering key energy-intensive facilities such as O’Hare and Midway airports. Other prominent customers benefiting from this solar farm include CVS Health, Loyola University Chicago, PPG, State Farm, TransUnion, and Cook County, all thanks to Constellation NewEnergy.
The development of this project has been in progress since 2018, with Swift Current Energy strategically leveraging a growing US supply chain. The company procured most of its 1.6 million solar panels from First Solar’s Ohio factories, while the racking system was sourced from Nextracker, which used US-made steel and even conducted some manufacturing in Chicago. The construction phase of the project also created around 500 jobs, contributing to the local economy.
Furthermore, the Double Black Diamond Solar project aligns with Illinois’ Clean and Equitable Jobs Act (CEJA) standards for labor and hiring practices, providing job opportunities for a diverse group of workers. Over its operational lifespan, the solar farm is projected to generate $100 million in local tax revenue for Sangamon and Morgan counties. A significant portion of these funds will be allocated to public schools, with the remainder supporting public safety, infrastructure, and community programs. Swift Current Energy has also committed $10 million to community benefit programs, including support for school districts and local governments.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson praised the project as a prime example of the benefits of investing in the green economy. He emphasized that the solar farm not only helps the city reduce emissions but also creates good union jobs and lowers energy costs for city operations.
In conclusion, the completion of the Double Black Diamond Solar project represents a significant milestone in advancing clean energy initiatives in the region. With its large capacity and positive impact on the local community, this solar farm sets a benchmark for sustainable energy projects in the area.
