Volkswagen’s popular electric SUV, the ID.4, is gearing up for a major refresh that will bring significant changes both inside and out. The upcoming update will align the ID.4 with Volkswagen’s new design language, similar to the recently unveiled ID.2all concept. Here’s what we know so far about the upcoming changes to the ID.4.
The ID.4, which recently received upgrades for the 2024 model year, is now due for its second major refresh. The new look will feature an updated front end, a more powerful stance, and cleaner character lines, in line with Volkswagen’s evolving electric vehicle lineup.
According to VW’s tech boss, Kai Grünitz, the ID.4 will be the second vehicle in Volkswagen’s lineup to receive the new design updates, following the ID.3. The refreshed ID.4 will sport a “lower and squatter stance,” giving it a family resemblance to the ID.2. Additionally, the interior of the ID.4 will undergo a complete overhaul, with Volkswagen planning to reintroduce physical buttons for a more user-friendly experience.
One of the notable changes in the interior will be the addition of a round knob for volume control, a feature that has been a staple in automotive design for years. The interior of the ID.4 is expected to draw inspiration from the ID.2all concept, showcasing a modern and futuristic design that represents the future of Volkswagen interiors.
In terms of performance and range, the new ID.4 is expected to come equipped with advanced electric motors, batteries, and other EV technologies, offering increased range and performance compared to the current model. The refreshed ID.4 is set to arrive in the second half of 2026, following the launch of the updated ID.3.
Volkswagen is also gearing up to introduce the production version of the ID.2, a new entry-level EV that will kick off a series of affordable electric vehicles. The ID.2 will be followed by an SUV version and a smaller, lower-cost ID.1, expanding Volkswagen’s electric vehicle lineup.
In the US, the 2025 Volkswagen ID.4 starts at $45,095 with an EPA-estimated range of 291 miles. In Europe, the ID.4 is priced around €35,000 ($41,000) with a WLTP range of up to 550 km (342 miles).
