Toyota C-HR review | Autocar

The Toyota C-HR is equipped with an all-hybrid powertrain lineup, offering two ‘self-charging’ hybrid options. The first is a 1.8-liter engine that produces 138bhp, while the second is a 2.0-liter version that delivers 193bhp. The 1.8-liter variant accelerates from 0-62mph in 10.2 seconds, while the 2.0-liter version achieves the same feat in 8.1 seconds.

While both powertrains may lack a distinct punch, they are capable of handling various driving conditions, including city streets, highways, and mountain roads. The power delivery is smooth, but when accelerating, you may notice the sound of the CVT slipping and the engine revving hard to generate torque, especially in the 2.0-liter version.

The 2.0-liter plug-in hybrid variant, utilizing Toyota’s fifth-generation hybrid system, combines a 2.0-liter petrol engine with a 161bhp electric motor. This configuration allows for a maximum output of 220bhp to the front wheels. The PHEV offers a seamless transition between electric and combustion power sources, providing instant acceleration in EV mode and good throttle response from the engine.

Despite the improved performance of the PHEV, its top speed remains the same as the regular hybrid version, and it is only slightly quicker to reach 62mph. The powertrain, like the other hybrid options, tends to rev high to deliver power, which may not appeal to those seeking a sportier driving experience.

The PHEV boasts an official electric-only range of 41 miles, although real-world testing showed a range closer to 30 miles. Drivers have the option to use EV mode, hybrid mode, or charge the battery using regenerative braking for later use. The regenerative braking system can be adjusted to offer one-pedal driving in the most aggressive setting.

Overall, the PHEV, while slightly improved in performance and throttle response, still exhibits some of the characteristics of the other hybrid powertrains, such as a flat sound and occasional roughness. Despite these drawbacks, the Toyota C-HR remains a solid choice for those looking for a fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly vehicle.
