Toyota, Mazda begin testing ESS using EV batteries

Toyota Motor Corporation and Mazda Motor Corporation have embarked on joint field tests of Toyota’s “Sweep” Energy Storage System (ESS) at Mazda’s headquarters plant in Hiroshima, Japan. The primary objective of these tests is to facilitate the development of an electric vehicle (EV) battery ecosystem, thereby contributing to carbon neutrality.

The field tests involve the utilization of Mazda’s in-house power generation system at its headquarters, which is recognized as the only power generation system operated by an automaker in Japan. Additionally, Toyota’s Sweep system, which leverages EV batteries, is being integrated into the tests. The two systems are interconnected through their respective energy management systems (EMS).

Toyota’s Sweep system is distinguished by its ability to swiftly switch the power flow on and off for each battery, even when new batteries are connected to degraded batteries or batteries of different capacities. This innovative technology enhances the stability, quality, and efficiency of the charging and discharging processes of the ESS.

In the future, Toyota and Mazda plan to leverage ESS to regulate power supply and demand from renewable energy providers, which often fluctuates significantly based on weather conditions and time of day. This initiative aligns with the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association’s focus on addressing seven mobility industry issues, with the battery ecosystem aiming to sustainably reuse batteries in Japan, including those from electrified vehicles.

Both companies are committed to tackling challenges within the industry and adopting a multi-pathway approach to achieve carbon neutrality while enhancing industry competitiveness. By collaborating on cutting-edge technologies like the Sweep ESS, Toyota and Mazda are paving the way for a more sustainable and efficient automotive sector.
