Trump to shut down all 8,000 EV charging ports at federal govt buildings

The Trump administration has made a controversial decision to shut down EV chargers at all federal government buildings and is also planning to sell off the General Services Administration’s (GSA) newly purchased electric vehicles. This move has sparked concern among environmentalists and advocates for clean energy initiatives.

GSA, which oversees all federal government-owned buildings, currently operates around 8,000 EV charging ports used by federally owned EVs and federal employee-owned personal EVs. However, the recent directive from the administration states that these charging stations are no longer considered “mission-critical.”

According to a report from The Verge, the GSA has informed regional offices about the decision to cancel contracts that keep the EV chargers operational. Once these contracts are terminated, the charging stations will be deactivated, rendering them unusable for both government-owned and privately owned vehicles.

Colorado Public Radio first reported on the email sent to the Denver Federal Center, which houses 22 EV charging stations across 11 locations. The decision to shut down these chargers has raised concerns about the impact on federal employees who rely on EVs for transportation.

Additionally, the GSA’s fleet electrification webpage has been taken offline, signaling a shift away from the Biden administration’s efforts to promote electric vehicles within the federal government. It remains unclear whether the EVs purchased during the previous administration will be sold or stored.

This latest development comes on the heels of the administration’s cancellation of the federal NEVI EV charger program, further raising questions about the future of electric vehicle infrastructure in government facilities.

For those looking to make their homes more resilient to power outages, going solar and adding a battery storage system may be a viable solution. EnergySage offers a free service to help homeowners find trusted, reliable solar installers at competitive prices. By comparing personalized solar quotes online, homeowners can save 20-30% compared to going it alone.

In conclusion, the decision to shut down EV chargers at federal government buildings and sell off newly purchased electric vehicles has sparked controversy and raised concerns about the future of clean energy initiatives within the government. It remains to be seen how this decision will impact federal employees and the overall transition to electric vehicles in the public sector.
