Up returns: VW previews £17k city car ahead of March reveal

Volkswagen is gearing up to introduce a new affordable electric car to the market, with a focus on making electric vehicles more accessible to a broader customer base. The VW ID 2all is set to be priced at €25,000, with plans in the works for a model below €20,000 as well. According to Grünitz, bringing a smaller, more affordable electric car to market is essential in convincing customers that electric vehicles are the way forward.

The emphasis is on creating a car that meets the demands of customers in that price range, without the need for high-end technology. Instead of fancy infotainment systems, the car may feature a smartphone cradle for added convenience. The goal is to make the interior spacious and practical, with innovative storage solutions to maximize space.

The new Volkswagen electric car will be designed primarily for city driving, rather than long-distance travel. It will not have a 200kW fast-charging capacity or a battery that allows for extended trips on the highway. The focus is on creating a practical city car that is “bigger inside than outside”, prioritizing efficiency and functionality.

Grünitz also hinted at the possibility of the new car serving as a ‘loss leader’, introducing younger users to the Volkswagen EV lineup. While it may not generate significant profits on its own, the new model could attract first-time car buyers and potentially lead them to upgrade to more expensive models in the future.

Overall, Volkswagen is looking to make electric vehicles more accessible and appealing to a wider audience with the introduction of the new affordable electric car. By focusing on practicality, affordability, and user-friendly features, the ID 2all aims to make a positive impact on the electric vehicle market.
