Used BMW X1 2015-2021 review

BMW’s decision to reposition the X1’s engine at a 90-degree angle had a significant impact on the car’s interior space and practicality. The second-generation X1 saw a remarkable transformation, going from one of the least practical crossovers in its class to one of the most versatile.

One of the most noticeable changes was the increase in headroom and legroom in the front row, despite sitting 30mm higher in the front and even higher in the rear compared to the previous model. The addition of optional sliding rear seats further enhanced passenger space, surpassing competitors like the Nissan Qashqai, Mercedes-Benz GLA, and Audi Q3 in terms of roominess.

The X1’s boot was also commendable, with a long and deep storage area that could be expanded by folding the back seats in a 40/20/40 configuration. The option for a folding front passenger seatback added to the car’s practicality, making it a top choice for those needing ample cargo space.

Inside the cabin, the premium feel of the BMW brand was evident in the high-quality materials used throughout. The cabin boasted a solid and well-finished look, with soft-touch surfaces complemented by textured aluminum and satin chrome accents. The oyster and black leather upholstery added to the luxurious ambiance of the interior.

Storage was plentiful in both rows, with convenient cubbies and bottle holders for added convenience. While some may have desired more charging ports and Isofix anchorages, these minor issues did not detract from the overall excellence of the X1’s interior design.

BMW’s attention to detail extended to the vehicle’s trim levels, with each offering a range of features to suit different preferences. From the entry-level SE trim with iDrive and multimedia system to the top-tier M-Sport trim with sporty enhancements, buyers had plenty of options to customize their X1 to their liking.

The extensive options list allowed for additional luxuries and conveniences, such as a larger control display, online services, and a head-up display. The Navigation Plus package, while an added cost, proved to be a worthwhile investment with its detailed navigation map and real-time traffic information.

In terms of entertainment, the X1 offered an optional Harman Kardon premium hi-fi system that delivered impressive audio quality. Overall, the X1’s interior design and features set a new standard for practicality and luxury in the crossover segment.
