Used Fiat Panda 2012-2024 review

Is the Fiat Panda a Reliable Car Choice?

When it comes to reliability, the Fiat Panda is known for being a sturdy and long-lasting vehicle, especially in its 4×4 and Cross variations. While there are a few common issues that may arise, such as oil leaks and brake noises, these are all fixable problems with readily available parts.

Although the Fiat Panda did not specifically feature in What Car?’s recent reliability survey, the Fiat brand as a whole ranked 12th out of 31 manufacturers, showcasing a decent level of reliability.

Drivetrain: One common issue with 4×4 Pandas is oil weeping from the rear differential, often caused by a worn or damaged seal. Replacing the seal can usually solve this problem, with replacement differentials costing between £300 to £900 on eBay.

Another area to watch out for is oil leaks from the propshaft where it meets the front transfer case. A new seal can fix this issue, but it’s recommended to have a professional handle this complex job.

Brakes: Keep an ear out for squealing noises coming from the rear brakes. Cleaning and greasing them can help, and Fiat offers vibration dampers to address this issue if needed.

Interior: Some owners have reported rattling rear seats, which can be resolved by greasing the latches. While trim pieces and the dashboard may also rattle, these are minor inconveniences that can be managed.

Body: For 4×4 models that may have ventured off-road, check the skidplates, plastic bumpers, and underside for any damage. The boot mechanism and latch are also areas to inspect for faults to avoid costly replacements.

Wheels: Inspect the alloy wheels for any scuffs, as the Panda’s ample tyre sidewall provides protection but doesn’t safeguard against cosmetic damage.

Real Owner Testimonial

Ben McCaulder: “I have a strong attachment to Pandas since learning to drive in one. Opting for the 4×4 Twinair was a practical decision for rural living, offering a fun and engaging driving experience. Despite its budget-friendly nature, features like Bluetooth and heated seats add a touch of comfort.

“While the official fuel economy figures may be optimistic, the Panda remains enjoyable to drive. Servicing costs are affordable, with occasional bills for maintenance like brakes and springs. One unexpected repair was a failed propshaft bearing, but aftermarket replacements proved to be cost-effective.”

Additional Information to Consider

The Fiat Panda achieved a four-star safety rating from Euro NCAP in 2012, with a high score of 82% for adult occupant protection.

While certain Panda models incur no road tax, opting for a Multijet diesel variant can further reduce tax costs to as low as £20 annually. Cross and 4×4 variants may have higher tax rates, reaching up to £190 per year.

Trim levels for the Panda include Pop, Easy, and Lounge, with special editions like Trekking, City Life, City Cross, Garmin, Waze, and Wild offering unique features and styling options.
