Volkswagen’s Approach to Naming Classic Model Names for ID Electric Cars
Volkswagen has announced that it will only give its ID electric cars classic model names if they align with the characteristics of the original models. This decision was explained by Volkswagen boss Thomas Schäfer, who clarified that the upcoming ID 3, despite being heavily updated, will not be badged as a Golf.
The company is currently working on significant updates for both the ID 3 and ID 4, with both electric vehicles transitioning to the upgraded ‘MEB Plus’ platform. While the ID 4 is internally referred to as the ID Tiguan, the ID 3 will not be named the ID Golf, even though it closely resembles the Golf in Volkswagen’s traditional internal combustion engine lineup.
Thomas Schäfer emphasized that the changes being made to the ID 3 should not be underestimated. He highlighted the improvements in the interior, addressing issues such as hard plastic finishes. The upcoming facelift will introduce a completely new interior design, enhancing the overall driving experience. Schäfer also praised the exterior design of the ID 3, calling it a “phenomenal package.”
Looking ahead, Volkswagen plans to reintroduce classic model names with the upcoming ID Polo and ID Cross. Schäfer assured that moving forward, new models or significant product changes will be accompanied by classic names. However, he stressed that the application of these names will be based on the essence of the models, ensuring alignment with the DNA of the products.
According to Schäfer, it is crucial for the names to accurately reflect the characteristics of the vehicles. He emphasized the importance of maintaining clarity in the model lines and preserving familiar themes like the GTI. The recently unveiled ID Polo, for example, embodies the essence of the Polo in terms of proportions, aesthetics, and performance.
In conclusion, Volkswagen is committed to naming its electric cars based on their true characteristics and heritage. Schäfer reiterated that if a classic model name does not align with a new model, a different name will be chosen from the extensive portfolio of names available.
