Volkswagen has made the decision to cancel the release of the Volkswagen ID.7 electric hatchback in the U.S. and Canadian markets. This news comes after a delay in the launch of the ID.7, which was originally scheduled to arrive in the U.S. as a 2025 model.
According to a report by The Car Guide, Volkswagen spokesperson Mark Gillies confirmed that the ID.7 will no longer be offered in North America due to the challenging electric vehicle climate. Despite this setback, Volkswagen remains committed to introducing new electric models to the market.
Gillies expressed optimism about the reception of other electric models, such as the ID.Buzz and the ID.4, in the North American market. The ID.Buzz, a modern interpretation of the classic Microbus, has been well-received since its introduction, while the ID.4 crossover has seen strong sales since its debut in 2021.
The ID.7, which was unveiled in 2023, shares the same MEB architecture as the ID.4 and ID.Buzz but features sleeker bodywork inspired by the ID.Aero concept from 2022. It was poised to compete against the Hyundai Ioniq 6 and Tesla Model 3 in the non-luxury electric sedan segment in the U.S.
Originally scheduled for release in Europe in 2023, the ID.7 has been available in its basic hatchback form, with a Tourer wagon variant also introduced later on. However, the wagon variant was never intended for the U.S. market due to low demand for wagons.
While the cancellation of the ID.7 in North America is disappointing news for electric vehicle enthusiasts, Volkswagen remains committed to its long-term product strategy of introducing new electric models to the market. The decision to focus on other electric models like the ID.Buzz and ID.4 reflects Volkswagen’s dedication to meeting the evolving needs of consumers in the electric vehicle market.
