Volkswagen CEO questions need for range-extender EVs in Europe

Volkswagen CEO Doubts Introduction of Range-Extender Powertrains in Europe

Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schäfer has raised concerns about the potential introduction of range-extender (REx) powertrains in Europe, citing the brand’s existing lineup of conventional hybrid powertrains as sufficient for the market.

The discussion around REx technology was sparked by Volkswagen’s unveiling of the ID Era concept at the Shanghai motor show, showcasing a large, range-extender electric SUV designed for the Chinese market with an impressive total range of 621 miles. Sales and marketing executives at the event suggested that REx powertrains could serve as an intermediary step for consumers and may have relevance in Europe as well.

However, Schäfer now questions the practicality of REx powertrains in Volkswagen’s European strategy, particularly in smaller models. He emphasized that the technology is more suited for larger vehicles like the ID Era SUV and may not be necessary in the brand’s current European lineup.

With Volkswagen already offering plug-in hybrid powertrains in almost every car above the Polo in Europe, providing significant electric range, Schäfer doubts the need for introducing another form of electrified powertrain. He highlighted the high cost of REx technology, which combines a large electric battery with a conventional ICE powertrain, making it less viable compared to plug-in hybrids.

Schäfer pointed to the impressive electric ranges and fast-charging capabilities of Volkswagen’s latest PHEVs, suggesting that replacing this system with REx technology in models like the Golf, Passat, Tiguan, and Tayron may not be practical. He acknowledged the potential for REx powertrains in larger models like the upcoming Scout in the US, but questioned whether it would become a significant trend.

The ID Era is part of a trio of new Volkswagen concept cars tailored for the Chinese market, including the Passat-sized ID Aura saloon and the ID Evo SUV. These models showcase Volkswagen’s commitment to electrification and innovation in the rapidly evolving automotive landscape.
