Volvo Penta Partners with e-power to Develop Battery Energy Storage Systems
Volvo Penta, a veteran in marine and industrial power solutions, has teamed up with energy solutions provider e-power to create battery energy storage systems (BESS). These systems will power BESS units manufactured by e-power, catering to a variety of applications, particularly for construction rental clients such as Boels Rentals in Europe.
As a key player in sustainable power solutions within the Volvo Group, Volvo Penta has adapted to the shift towards all-electric technology. With a history spanning nearly a century, Volvo Penta remains a leader in marine propulsion systems and industrial engines. The company has embraced eco-friendly practices, such as running all diesel engines on hydro-treated vegetable oil (HVO) to significantly reduce emissions in the marine and industrial sectors.
In addition to traditional engines, Volvo Penta is committed to developing fossil-free power solutions, including battery electric components for heavy-duty applications like terminal tractors, forklifts, drill rigs, and feed mixers. The company’s dedication to sustainability extends to battery systems for energy storage, enabling portable and sustainable energy solutions for all-electric charging while reducing grid dependency.
The recent collaboration between Volvo Penta and e-power aims to develop scalable Battery Energy Storage Systems for Boels Rental, a construction rental giant. This partnership builds upon the companies’ long-standing relationship, with Boels relying on e-power generators featuring Volvo Penta engines for reliable performance.
Volvo Penta’s BESS subsystem includes battery packs, a Battery Management System (BMS), DC/DC converters, and thermal management, offering a compact and high-density solution optimized for rental operations. This design is integration-ready, allowing OEMs like e-power to customize and scale systems to meet specific customer needs.
According to Jens Fets, e-power’s business support director, the collaboration with Volvo Penta on battery energy storage systems will meet the growing demand for silent, low-emission, and mobile energy solutions in rental applications. These systems will help Boels Rental address its customers’ increasing need for clean, silent, and portable energy solutions in construction and industrial settings.
Volvo Penta’s BESS architecture represents a significant shift in rental power systems, paving the way for a cleaner and more sustainable future across industries. By leveraging innovative technology and strategic partnerships, Volvo Penta continues to drive the transition towards eco-friendly solutions in the power sector.
