Volkswagen is gearing up for a major update to its electric hatch lineup, with the ID 3 set to receive some significant changes. Unlike the smaller ID Polo, which will be getting a classic model name, the ID 3 will not be badged as a Golf, despite being its closest equivalent in VW’s combustion line-up.
Thomas Schafer, the company’s boss, emphasized the importance of giving classic model names only to electric models that truly embody the essence of the original vehicles. The ID 3 and ID 4 are both undergoing heavy updates and will be moving to the upgraded ‘MEB Plus’ platform. While the ID 4 is internally referred to as the ID Tiguan, the ID 3 will not be taking on the ID Golf nameplate.
Schafer highlighted the significant changes being made to the ID 3, particularly in the interior. He mentioned that the feedback on the car’s driving experience has been phenomenal, but improvements were needed in the interior design. The upcoming update will introduce a completely new interior, addressing previous criticisms about the hard plastic finish.
The exterior of the ID 3 is also set to undergo changes, with Schafer teasing that the car will be transformed into an “amazing” package. Despite the updates, he noted that a completely new car is not necessary, showcasing the versatility and potential of the existing model.
Volkswagen has also announced its return to using classic model names on existing models, starting with the ID Polo and ID Cross. Schafer emphasized the importance of aligning the names with the DNA of the products, ensuring that they truly reflect the characteristics of the vehicles.
As the automotive industry transitions to electric mobility, Volkswagen is committed to maintaining clarity in its portfolio and preserving the legacy of its iconic model names. By carefully selecting names that resonate with the essence of each vehicle, the brand aims to uphold its heritage while embracing the future of electric mobility.
