The Chinese battery-electric vehicle (BEV) market has a new leader with the Wuling Mini emerging as the top player in April. The competition in China’s growing BEV market is fierce, with 628,415 units delivered in the month, marking a 53.3% year-on-year increase.
March showed a similar growth rate, while February was exceptionally strong, and January comparatively weaker. Overall, China’s BEV market saw a 50.7% growth in the first four months of 2025, reaching nearly 2.18 million deliveries. On the other hand, the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) market in China experienced slightly less growth, with deliveries increasing by 32.3% in April to 395,359 units.
The Wuling Mini, with a remarkable 256.7% year-on-year sales growth, captured the top spot in April with 36,337 deliveries, representing a 5.8% market share. However, the competition is tight, with the Geely Geome Xingyuan closely following in second place with 36,270 sales and a 5.8% market share. The BYD Seagull secured the third spot with a 5.4% market share, despite a 3.4% decrease in sales.
Other notable models include the Xiaomi SU7 in fourth place, doubling its sales to 28,585 units, and the Wuling Bingo in fifth place, experiencing a significant 126.3% growth in deliveries. The Tesla Model Y, however, saw a 54.7% decline in sales, landing it in sixth place with 19,984 units sold.
The Wuling Mini’s rapid sales growth since the beginning of the year has solidified its position at the top of the market. With a 5.8% market share in the first four months of 2025, the Wuling Mini is closely trailed by the Geely Geome Xingyuan, just 19 units behind over the same period.
The BYD Song Plus led the PHEV market in April, with 19,100 sales but a 21.8% decrease year-on-year. The BYD Qin Plus and Li Auto L6 followed in second and third place, respectively. BYD continued to dominate the top 10 PHEV models, with seven out of the ten models coming from the carmaker.
In conclusion, the Chinese EV market is highly competitive, with new models making significant strides and established players facing challenges. The Wuling Mini’s rise to the top highlights the dynamic nature of the market, where innovation and performance play crucial roles in determining success.
