Xiaomi Sets Timeline to Sell EVs Overseas by 2027

Xiaomi, the smartphone giant, is making bold moves in the electric vehicle (EV) market, with plans to sell its EVs in overseas markets by 2027. This announcement was made by William Lu, also known as Lu Weibing, the president of Xiaomi, during an interview at the ongoing MWC 2025 event in Barcelona, Spain. This marks the first time that Xiaomi’s management has provided a clear timeline for entering overseas markets.

At the MWC 2025 event, Xiaomi showcased the SU7 Ultra electric sedan, along with the Xiaomi 15 Ultra smartphone. Following the event, Lu expressed his intention to visit the European automotive market to assess the performance of Chinese carmakers in that region.

Xiaomi’s foray into the EV market has been met with skepticism over the past few years. However, with the launch of the SU7, many of these doubts have been dispelled. Lu mentioned that the market dynamics have shifted significantly since the launch of the SU7 last March. The introduction of the SU7 Ultra further solidified Xiaomi’s position in the Chinese market.

The strategy for Xiaomi’s EV business is focused on establishing a strong presence in the Chinese market before expanding overseas. Lu emphasized the importance of a solid foundation in the home market as a prerequisite for successful international expansion.

Xiaomi officially entered the EV market in March 2021 and unveiled its first model, the SU7, in December 2023. The SU7 made its international debut at the MWC 2024 event and was officially launched in March 2024 with a starting price of RMB 215,900 ($29,680).

The SU7 received over 248,000 locked-in orders and delivered more than 135,000 units in its first year. In February 2025, Xiaomi launched the SU7 Ultra, an ultra-performance electric sedan with three motors delivering 1,548 Ps of maximum horsepower.

With the SU7 Ultra surpassing its sales targets in China, Xiaomi is now gearing up to expand its EV business globally. The company’s ambitious goal to sell EVs in overseas markets by 2027 reflects its commitment to establishing a strong presence in the rapidly evolving automotive industry.

As Xiaomi continues to innovate and push boundaries in the EV market, the future looks promising for the tech giant’s venture into electric mobility. Stay tuned for more updates on Xiaomi’s EV journey as it navigates the competitive landscape of the automotive industry.
